Occipital Nerve Injections

Occipital Nerve Injections

Occipital Nerve Injections are used to reduce pain and inflammation around the occipital nerves, which are located at the back of the head. This procedure is highly effective in alleviating pain caused by headaches, including tension headaches and migraine headaches.

Procedure Overview

The procedure takes just a few minutes. First, the back of the head is cleaned with an antiseptic solution to prepare the area. A mixture of local anesthetic and steroid is then injected directly around the occipital nerves. Although there may be mild discomfort from the injection, the area is numbed to minimize pain.

Patients typically begin to experience pain relief within three to five days, with the effects lasting anywhere from several days to a few months. This treatment can provide significant relief from chronic headaches, allowing patients to resume normal activities without constant pain.

At Montgomery Pain Institute, our specialists offer occipital nerve injections as part of a comprehensive approach to treating headache disorders and reducing nerve-related pain.
