Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down one or both legs. This pain is usually caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc or bone spur pressing on the nerve. While sciatica typically affects only one side of the body, the pain can vary in intensity and severity.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatica originates in the spine and radiates down the back of the leg. Symptoms can range from infrequent irritation to constant, debilitating pain. People with sciatica may experience:
- Pain areas: Lower back, buttocks, hips, and legs
- Pain types: Radiating, sharp, mild, or severe pain; may be chronic in the lower back
- Pain triggers: Can occur while sitting, during the night, or due to injury
- Other symptoms: Burning sensation, numbness in the foot or leg, muscle weakness, pins and needles, or limping
The specific location and severity of sciatica symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause, such as a lumbar herniated disc. While sciatica can cause significant discomfort, permanent nerve damage is rare.
