Back and Neck Pain
Back and neck pain are common issues, affecting two-thirds of the population at some point in their lives. While neck pain may be felt in the neck, it is often caused by problems elsewhere in the spine. Common causes include muscle tightness in the neck and upper back, as well as nerve compression from the cervical vertebrae. Joint dysfunction in both the neck and upper back also leads to pain and discomfort.
The head is supported by the lower neck and upper back, where most neck pain originates. The top three joints in the neck allow for most of its movement, while the lower neck joints and upper back provide a supportive structure for the head. Disruption in this support system often causes muscle tension and pain.
For low back pain, a detailed medical history and physical examination are the first steps in diagnosis. While x-rays may be used to further evaluate the condition, they are not necessary for all patients.
Treatment Options
Most patients with back and neck pain see improvement with a combination of:
- Controlled physical activity
- Physical therapy
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Muscle relaxants for appropriate cases
Surgery is reserved for patients who do not respond to conservative treatments and exhibit clear symptoms, such as sciatica or herniated discs, that can be corrected surgically.
At Montgomery Pain Institute, we take a multi-disciplinary approach to treating chronic low back pain, addressing not only the physical aspects of the condition but also the psychological and socioeconomic factors. Our goal is to provide comprehensive care that improves long-term outcomes.
